FOREWORD to 1986 year Anthology III edition
-----
Part Three of the "Anthology of Compositions for Button Accordion" contains folk tunes
as arranged by this country's professional composers and accordion players in the
fifties, sixties, and seventies — conventional adaptations of songs and dances and
concertante-style paraphrases by both renowned masters and younger talented musicians,
resident in different republics and provinces of the USSR.
It is incontestable that the modern button accordion has been integrated into the
sphere of what can be described as sophisticated chamber music, so the present-day
stage in cultivating the instrument admits of judging by the standards applicable
to the whole of contemporary art music. For all that, the button accordion is by
no means divorced from its folk roots — it is still truly popular with the masses.
That is why widely known songs and dances, notably unpretentious arrangements of
traditional folk tunes, are absolutely indispensable to the accordionist's repertoire
* .

instrumental pieces peculiar to the musical culture of the Kazakhs, traditionally
played on the two-stringed plucked instrument called dombra (the stress is on the
second syllable. — V. Y.). Kurmangazy's kyuis, which were programmatic (descriptive),
reflected the real life of the Kazakh people; they had a great impact on the development
of the art of music in West Kazakhstan. At present, the kyui compositions are also
performed as arranged for symphony orchestra, for a group of folk instruments, for
a European instrument (e. g., piano or violin), or for choir, etc. Kurmangazy's
Adai Kyui is arranged for button accordion by Anatoly Mubaryakzanovich Gaisin (b.
1952), prizewinner in an international performers' competition, Instructor at
the Alma-Ata Conservatoire.

Some of the compositions chosen for the present publication are, as a matter of
fact, original concert pieces, with folk melodies employed as themes which undergo
development within the framework of a self-dependent structural conception. Yet
the bulk of the volume is constituted by folk-songs arranged in a fairly straightforward
and unassuming manner.
The title of each song, which, in most cases, is incidentally none other but the
opening line of the lyrics, is transliterated (viz., romanized) and, in brackets
and quotation marks, rendered into English by means of what might be referred to
as "equirhythmic translation", that is to say, a translation which conveys not
only the meaning of the original but also its metre (i. e., arrangement of stressed
and unstressed syllables). The same applies to the two previous volumes of the Anthology
(Part One: Moscow 1984; Part Two: Moscow 1985).— V. Y.
